| » Purchasing Trip to Madagascar |
Would you travel to a country without knowing its language, where all the roads are unmaintained dirt (no freeways), the electricity is frequently out and running water availability is limited, with no guarantee of being able to get what you came for?
That is Madagascar, a picturesque paradise of landscapes and gemstones, and a challenging visit every time for the stones that so many people love and prize.

The classic stone is the fascinating labradorite, the best in the world. Among others, we carry the large tumbled stones (aka pebbles or gallets), face-polished pieces, and free-form sculptures, as well as cabochons in various shapes and sizes.
Other highlights are polychrome jasper, one of the most colorful jaspers in the world; unique blue celestine crystal geodes, again, some of the best in the world; and high quality rose quartz, famous for its color, clarity and asterism.
Petrified wood from Madagascar is also very prized, as it is more colorful than most varieties found in the USA, as well as being much better fossilized. This results in many beautiful collectors' pieces that show every fine detail in the bark of the wood.
Truly extraordinary are the inclusion quartz crystals: clear or smoky, sometimes with traces of amethyst and/or phantoms, with interesting inclusions of water, gas, chlorite, rutile, mica and indescribable 3D structures!

| South Africa, the southernmost country of the African continent, has plenty of great gemstones to offer. In fall of 2016 we visited some of the most important mines there in order to personally select good stones.
Our trip resulted in a fresh selection of many favorites, old and new, shipped directly to Tucson! |
We uniquely carry a great selection of tiger eye rough stones in the show in Tucson. We offer rare, thick pieces in different grades and colors, including the gemmiest golden tiger eye, the hawk eye, the red tiger eye, and many pieces with a combination of the colors. You can pick through our selections to find seams from .5 up to 6 inches thick! Tiger eye is ideal for lapidary work including slabs, cabochons and jewelry, as well as being a famous collector's stone. See another of our websites for more details and photos from the mines.

Furthermore, we were able to get quite a bit of big chunks of red jasper directly from its mine. This jasper is famous for being very pure, with almost no inclusions of other minerals, and has a uniformly red color.
Worth mentioning is also the "African Turquoise," sold under that name because of its similarity in color and appearance to genuine turquoise. However, it's really quartz-diorite, saturated with copper-bearing solutions leading to the formation of chrysocolla and other minerals.
We also visited the manganese mines in Kuruman, South Africa, hoping to find sugilite for sale there. However, it proved to be very difficult, as sugilite is a rare occurrence in the manganese and not valued by the miners. Visit us in Tucson to find out what we got ;-) |
From Namibia, we were able to acquire nice pieces of blue lace agate rough stones. That fascinating periwinkle agate is very unique in its structure, being a seam agate with druse formations. The production of the mine has declined in the past few years, as the miners must go deeper and deeper to find more. That's why it gets increasingly difficult to get hold of high quality pieces of that gemstone. We will have almost two tons in Tucson ‐ everything from small chips and pieces, to large, rare pieces with very thick layers and bright color.
Because all of our African products come straight from the mines and are delivered directly to Tucson, we can offer you especially good prices. Visit us on Facebook and have a look at our South Africa photo album! |

Pinolite is a special, crystallized version of dolomite, magnesite (white) and graphite (black). A unique and rare stone, its interesting black-white contrast and unique crystallization structures give it the nickname "ice flower stone". Still fairly new to the American market, pinolite has recently been highly sought after for its beauty and ease of lapidary use, as it is a soft and workable stone that takes a great polish. The only significant source is high in the Austrian Alps, from mines as a byproduct of magnesite. This year we will again bring tons of rough, as well as some polished, shaped and jewelry stones.

Thulite is a variety of zoisite with a bright, solid baby pink color. (Zoisite is also famous for its blue variety, tanzanite, as well as the green zoisite with rubies, both from Tanzania.) The eye-catching color makes thulite very interesting and unique, as it is an affordable lapidary material. Its durability and polishability lends itself well to jewelry and other lapidary projects. |
A rare material, there aren't many sources worldwide. Traditionally, the best source of thulite is Norway, where it is so valued that it is Norway's national stone. We ourselves quarry our thulite in a very remote location, with no roads or electricity, in a swampy area on private property in Norway. That source provides some of the best thulite worldwide; however, it must all be hand-dug, a very difficult venture. In the short Norwegian summer of 2016 we were able to quarry a few tons with very intensive color. That material will be exclusively available in Tucson. |
